Designing and building the Net Zero Outcomes Tracker

NSW OECC

Context

The NSW Net Zero Plan outlines the state government's strategy for achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Plan includes a range of measures aimed at reducing emissions across the economy, including in the energy, transport, and building sectors.

The NSW Net Zero Outcomes Tracker is an internal data visualisation tool for the Net Zero Steering Committee used to track progress against all 26 KPIs of the Plan.

Shyft joined forces with the OECC to jointly create and construct the Net Zero Outcomes Tracker. The primary goal was to provide comprehensive, user-friendly and meaningful insights into the status of the Net Zero portfolio in order to enhance the program's guidance and decision-making procedures.

Approach

Shyft has taken a co-design approach in designing the Net Zero Outcomes Tracker:

  1. We aligned on design principles for the design and use of the Net Zero Outcomes Tracker.
  2. Subsequently, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the 26 indicators spanning all outcome areas to gain a deeper understanding of their context, facilitating our recommendations for the most suitable data visualisation methods.
  3. We co-designed, iterated and aligned on front-end UX via low-fidelity mock ups for navigation elements, chart types, data types, drill downs and commentary.
  4. We defined backend data structures for all indicators (including calculation logic, targets, dimensions) to most efficiently feed and maintain the dashboard.

Outcomes

As a result, Shyft was able to provide the OECC with:

  • A comprehensive view of the Net Zero portfolio spanning 26 indicators across 4 outcome areas.
  • The ability to understand progress as well as gaps to manage and direct the portfolio toward achieving
    the targets
  • An intuitive and simple, yet exhaustive user experience with dedicated drill downs for in-depth understanding of the indicator dimensions.
  • Data structures and tables that will make the future maintenance efficient and ensure high levels of data quality.
  • A detailed user guide as part of the BAU handover.
  • Recommendations for enhancing portfolio management in the future to facilitate improved adaptive management.
