Context
Shyft advised the Litter Prevention Unit (LPU) in New South Wales in developing a new data & insights strategy.
The goal was to better understand, visualise, utilise and manage available data and potential new data to inform litter prevention program design.
In addition, it was key to identify how data can help to understand how to align with existing and new outcomes such as plastic litter reduction.
More than 15 data sets are being used and managed by the LPU to date. Each data set was used for distinct purposes.
Approach
Shyft has taken a “top-down approach” in redefining the LPU’s data and insights strategy:
- Align on a common understanding of the litter journey and define overarching objectives of LPU’s future state data & insights strategy.
- Conduct deep dive analyses for each data objective by developing an approach to achieving the objective and reviewing & mapping all relevant existing data sets.
- Define data management practices and developed recommendations related to data source management and data governance.
Outcome
As a result Shyft was able to provide the LPU with:
- A framework to structure and prioritise LPUs data and insights.
- Visual mapping of data availability along the litter journey and sample dashboard to monitor litter along the lifecycle. using existing and potential new data.
- Recommended approach in data enabled program and
campaign design. - Recommendations and examples related to data source management and data governance and a prioritised roadmap for implementation.
