Designing a data & insights strategy to help reducing NSW carbon footprint

NSW EPA

Context

The NSW EPA Net Zero Organics Unit is embarking on a new program design and confirming organics waste outcomes and impacts in alignment with multiple related strategies such as the 20-Year Waste Strategy and the Zero Emission Plan.

The unit wanted to prioritise and align outcomes facilitated by the UN Sustainability Goals framework.

The team wanted to understand how to align and connect diverse data sources to maximise opportunities for food waste recovery.

Further, the team wanted to understand how current data sets or potential new data sets could help prioritise the program and design intervention to reduce or divert organics waste.

Approach

Shyft has taken a “top-down approach” in defining the team’s outcomes and data and insights strategy:

  1. We applied a balanced approach to the UNSDGs to define new outcomes and impacts.
  2. Then, we reviewed existing waste frameworks and defined a holistic, multi-level organic waste framework to structure the analysis.
  3. In addition, we defined 4 data objectives that would drive deep dives and the future state recommendations.
  4. Finally, we designed a 3-horizon strategy and roadmap for the team to reach data and insights maturity.

Outcome

As a result, Shyft was able to provide the EPA with:

  • A set of focus outcomes, supporting outcomes and impacts that will shape the unit’s strategy.
  • A detailed framework to structure and prioritise the team’s data and insights based on the organics’ lifecycle and the data objectives.
  • 13 recommendations and a set of methodologies that will holistically drive data quality and insights quality.
  • A phased 3 horizons roadmap for implementation including quick wins across all data objectives.
